The history of the condom. The idea of Condoms have been around for
thousands of years.
1350 – 1220 BC:
Egyptian tribesmen use condoms to protect themselves from infection.
100 – 250 AD:
Cave paintings in the South of France show condoms were used by
Europeans as early as 100AD.
1500’s:
Italian Gabrielle Fallopius invented a condom made of linen and
conducted syphilis trials on thousands of men. None of the participants who
used the condoms became infected. In the 1500s, improvements to the condom
were made. The linen cloth sheaths were sometimes soaked in a chemical
solution and then allowed to dry prior to use. These were the first
spermicidal condoms.
1700’s:
Historical documents suggest that condoms made from animal guts were in
use as a contraceptive. Because they were expensive they were often reused.
In 1756 French lover Casanova uses condoms to prevent his many girlfriends
from getting pregnant. Rumor has it George Washington used animal skin from
animals he killed hunting.
1800’s:
The Japanese have different kinds of condoms to choose from, the
Kawagata or Kyotai condom, which was made of thin leather; the other was the
Kabutogata condom made of tortoiseshell or horn. In 1843 the condom industry
got a real boost with the discovery of the revolutionary process of “rubber
vulcanization. Condoms now can be mass produced. Condoms are now more
reliable and affordable.
1860's:
The first ad for condoms was seen in The New York Times.
1873:
The Comstock Law makes advertising birth control illegal.
1932
Liquid latex replaces crepe rubber for condom manufacturing. By 1935
more than a million condoms were being sold dayly in America.
1980’s:
Population is exploding so condoms became available everywhere. People
want to protect themselves from HIV and AIDS and of course unwanted
pregnancy.
1990’s:
Different types of condom came on to the market. Condoms with different
colours, flavor's and textures, sizes, shapes and more. Billions of condoms
are being purchased. The practice of safe sex is on the rise.
2000's:
Durex invents a polyurethane condoms. Durex Avanti. Now those that are
allergic to latex have an alternative.
Today
Nearly 10 billion condoms are used worldwide each year. People
understand the importance of safe sex.
